4 Moving Terms You Should Know – Part 1
Moving to a new city is not as simple as picking up your bag and driving there. You have to move your home, assets and the entire life you built over the years.
This requires months of planning and an excellent operations network. Throughout the moving journey, you will come across numerous moving terms. You need to know and learn these terms to ensure you are protected and the entire process runs smoothly.
Term 1: Accessorial Services
A standard moving company will help you with transporting your belongings from point A to point B. If you request the agency to perform any additional tasks that do not necessarily fall under their scope of work, it is known as accessorial services.
These services could include packing, unpacking or even moving heavy items up the stairs. Sometimes these requirements are made mandatory by the landlord for safety and liability purposes.
Term 2: Agent
An agent is a local moving company that is affiliated with a larger national group. This ensures fair play between all the moving companies, and the customers do not have to pay the price for it. An agent is authorised to book, origin, haul or destination services.
Term 3: Advanced charges
During the move, you might require services that are entirely out of the scope of work for the movers. A professional, craftsman or any third party vendor is brought in to fulfil your requests. The moving company acts as the facilitator and adds the cost of services to the final bill.
Term 4: Bill of lading
This is possibly the most important document in the entire moving process. It is a receipt or contract that pens down the specifics of the move. The client’s signature is needed to start the moving process, and once the bill is signed, it is legally binding.
