8 Things To Do After Moving To A New House

Everyone talks about what to do before moving and during the move but what about after? After you have relocated to a different house, there is a lot more to do. Here are five things to do after moving to a new house to get settled in.

1. Check and double-check:

If you moved on your own and without the help of a professional relocation company, you need to have a list of boxes that were packed. Once you have moved, check that every box has arrived at the new destination and is not lost.

2. Make a list of things to do:

Get a notepad and a pen or use your phone to make a list of things you need to do. Getting organized will help you prioritize your tasks like getting groceries, making a list of emergency contact numbers, babyproofing the house, finding the nearest hospital, finding a school for your kids, changing your address in important documents etc.

3. Check everything in the new house closely:

Are the lights working? Are the faucets and showers fixed and not leaky? Is some piece of furniture broke? Do the windows close right? Check everything minutely. IF something is not right, get it fixed right away. If it is not clean, get deep cleaning done.

4. Unpack only the most important things you need:

Start by unpacking the basic essentials you want like your toothbrush, pyjamas, medicines, soap, towel etc. Don’t unpack everything together. It will only stress you out.

5. Get your own lock:

Security is very important. You can change the lock of the house to be sure that no one else has the key to it.

6. Connect the appliances:

Get the essential appliances working like the refrigerator, oven and washing machine. This will help you unpack the largest boxes, and store and reheat food.

7. Make an unpacking schedule:

The next day, start unpacking room-wise. Choose the bedroom first so you can get a good night’s sleep. Continue unpacking everyday according to the time you have on your hand. Don’t procrastinate.

8. Don’t throw away the empty boxes:

Many of the moving boxes you used may be reusable. You can recycle them or give to a friend who is relocating. You can also give them back to your moving company.
