How To Deal With Homesickness Right After Relocation?

So you made the bold of ‘move’! Congratulations! Now you’ve got to unsettle and settle in a new place. Sometimes we might have physically relocated to a new place but might be mentally in the same old comfort zone we created for ourselves at home.

Living in a place is habit-forming. Breaking any habit is painful. You may start missing the coffee or the roads or the sounds of your old home. If you left people behind, you may start missing them and feel homesick! How do you do deal with this homesickness?

1. Carry a piece of home along!

It could be that small soft toy that you loved or a framed picture of the window in your room — bring something along that will bring you comfort and make you feel at home.

2. Keep in touch with people back home.

Don’t overdo this because it will make it impossible to transition into the new phase. Call and text your friends and family back home. Tell them how you feel. Video call them! This will help massively in dealing with homesickness.

3. If it’s too difficult, seek help.

Head to a professional counsellor if you think you are finding it too difficult to adjust in the new surroundings. Talking about it and taking tips from a pro will surely help.

4. Mingle and find something that makes you happy other than work.

The worst thing to do when you are feeling homesick is staying home. Go out, meet people, find an activity to do like serving at a homeless shelter or pursue a new hobby! Keeping busy will help.

5. Let it flow.

When you keep yourself busy, remember that you are only distracting yourself. It is important to let yourself feel anything you are going through. Cry your heart out. It’s alright. To stop feeling it, you need to feel it completely.
