Moving To Amsterdam? Read This First!
“What’s special about Amsterdam is that the city is able to connect worlds that are not otherwise connected.” – Marcel Wanders
Amsterdam has captured the imagination of many around the globe. It has a charming vibe that is engulfed in history. Did you know that the city centre is so well-preserved that it has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site? Do you know what’s cooler? The Netherlands is one of the happiest countries in the world to live in!
While you might be sold — before you consider moving to Amsterdam like many others, know what the city has in store for you. Here are the pros and cons of moving to Amsterdam!
THE UPSIDE
- Most Dutch people speak English, so communication should not be much of a problem.
- Excellent bike paths, which means transportation is cheap and great for health!
- If you are ready to commute, then you can find an apartment for reasonable rent in the outskirts of the city.
- The culture is free and the people are open-minded. Prostitution is legalized, marijuana is decriminalized and it is perhaps one of the most gay-friendly cities you will ever live in.
- The healthcare system is great, that’s one thing less to worry about.
- The city is beautiful (especially the canals) to look at which might keep you in high spirits.
- The infrastructure is great.
- The city is well-located for travel to the rest of Europe.
THE DOWNSIDE
- While English is spoken, most of the banking and government paperwork is in Dutch. You will need to know the language if you are going to be dealing with a lot of this.
- Expensive housing. Rents are sky-high.
- If you are used to great customer service, don’t expect that is most parts of Amsterdam.
- If you are used to politeness, you might find the locals to be rude.
- The weather is unpredictable.
